The Republican hypocrasy: States' Rights?

Mon Jun 06, 2005 at 02:30:08 PM PDT

The Washington Post reports a glaring hypocracy in the tradtional Republican argument of States' Rights:

In a 6-3 decision, [Supreme Court]agreed with the Bush administration that the regulation of controlled substances, including marijuana, is the province of Congress without exception.

More south of the border...

This is another example of the Republicans (read: Bushies) to follow their own agenda... only when convenient. It has been a consistent strategy of defering issues the Administration cannot handle themselves to the states (except the right of individual states to conduct their own elections see also: Election 2000) however since the Bushies want to "get the drugs" they are willing to trample the rights of states to govern themselves....

Now understand this I am not a marijuana appologist and am really nto even sure how i feel about state laws... but I cannot handle their inconsitency anymore...

As a former REpublican (until about January 20, 2001) this is exactly the crap the forced me to reconsider my political affiliation... now as an involved Democrat I see nothing more than the contiuned hypocrasy of the Republicans and this Administration in particular.

It has been a consistent theme in the Republican party to trample on individual state's rights (Terry Schiavo and this new decision) that I dont understand how they can hold on to their traditional base of conservatives.

Dating back to the origins of the Constitution, American Conservatives have been fierce proponents of this right and now modern conservatives are fierce proponents of the Bushies... is this an oxymoron...

Can someone please explain how the Bushies can flip-flop when convenient and no-one calls them on it... and most importantly how can they hold their base like this...

I just don't get them sometimes...
