The Rhetoric of "Pro-Life" Republicans

Wed May 25, 2005 at 09:52:21 AM PDT

There appears to be a pretty lengthy discussion of "pro-lifers" both Democrats and Republicans on MyDD. And it brings to mind the recent discussion of our party being based on single issues Kos has been posting on recently.

I'm going to say it now... throw all the rotten vegetables you want but it's true.... I am a "pro-life" Democrat... and proud of it. I have grown up believing that everyone has a right to life and that life begins at conception.

Here is what it really means to be pro-life, to support every thing that the Democratic Party stands for...

more south of the border...

The Democratic Platform supports:

-A high standard of living for everyone...
-A high standard of evidence send American boys off to die
-An environment that will still be here to support the lives of our children and grandchildren
-The chance for every man, woman and child to make a better life for themself.

These are the issues that make me a Democrat. Though the party may not support the right of the government to put an end to abortion (which I think may not be a feasible policy anyways)it is the party that supports the life of everyone. The Democratic Party works to create an environment where abortions are rare and unnecessary... this is where the Republican party misses the boat.

To Republicans pro-life means anti-abortion and that is where it stops. This is where the true single issue party emerges but we as Democrats cannot move past our own individual issues as Kos says and see that it is ok to allow "pro-lifers" to rise in our party because in the end the Democratic Party is pro-life in its policy and philosophy (regardless of its stance on the wedge issues) and promotes a better America... this is what we need to focus on to win and to create policy to promote a BETTER life for all Americans.
